Breed Expertise: Brachycephalic Breeds, Goldens, Boxers
Dr. Azalia Boyd grew up in Brooklyn, NY, where her love of animals began early in life. Her childhood was spent sneaking stray animals in her parents' home and rescuing them from the city streets. Following her passion, Dr. Boyd attended Tuskegee University, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Animal and Poultry Science. After graduation, she continued her studies at the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. Throughout her four years of veterinary school, she served as Vice President of the student body, was an assistant teacher for pre-vet classes, and donated her time to mentoring high-school students in math and sciences.
After graduation, Dr. Boyd completed a rigorous small animal emergency, surgery, and internal medicine internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, D.C. She has spent years in the emergency and operating room practicing, and says, "At the end of the day, I look at not only the lives that I've saved, but I think about the impact I have on the lives of the families I encounter. I know that I am right where I need to be."
Dr. Boyd has a special interest in the human-animal bond. She has served as a guest lecturer at veterinary schools discussing cultural competency and human-animal relationships. She prides herself on connecting with families from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
When not at work, Dr. Boyd can usually be found working out, spending time with her family, including her American Bulldog, Doobie, and travelling. She also enjoys live music and just hanging out with her friends.
