We want each of our patients to have a long and healthy life. The veterinarians at VCA Cordova Veterinary Hospital are trained to identify congenital and acquired heart disease. During your pet's physical examination, we will listen to the heart, identifying any murmurs or changes that may indicate a more serious heart condition.

If your veterinarian has cardiac concerns regarding your pet, he or she may order additional tests, including:
• A chest X-ray, which provides two-dimensional pictures of your pet's heart, allowing any abnormalities or foreign objects to be easily identified
• An echocardiogram, or ultrasound of the heart, which provides a three-dimensional image of the heart, allowing the technician to measure the size of the valves, monitor blood flow, or identify fluid
• An electrocardiogram, or ECG, which monitors your pet's heart rate and rhythm, noting any irregular heart beats
• Blood work, which can help identify different forms of heart disease

Finding out your pet has a heart condition can be scary. Our staff will work with you to educate you about your pet’s diagnosis, including treatment options and lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.
We will discuss with you what can be done to correct or minimize further damage. Establishing a treatment plan as quickly as possible is important so your pet can start to feel better and life a long and healthy life.

VCA Cordova Veterinary Hospital is equipped to perform electrocardiography on site, or through Cardiopet, a trans-telephonic service that transmits ECG to cardiology specialists. If advanced cardiac care is required, our affiliated specialist, Dr. Lori Siemens, a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine with a specialty in cardiology, is regularly available for cardiology examination and treatment.
