Orthopedic Surgery

At VCA Cordova Veterinary Hospital, our top priority is creating a safe and comfortable atmosphere from pre-surgical consult to post-surgery recovery for our patients and their families.

Our modern surgical suite is used to perform a wide variety of sterile surgical procedures. Whether your pet needs a routine elective procedure, such as a dog spay or cat neuter, or major surgery for an illness or injury, we are fully staffed and equipped to help your pet through surgery and into recovery safely and pain free.

Pre-surgical consults provide vital information about your pet and are required for all scheduled surgeries. This visit will include:

• A complete physical examination to ensure your pet is healthy enough for surgery
• Pre-anesthesia blood work in order to customize anesthesia and pain management protocols
• Update any vaccinations
• Review the procedure being performed and answer any questions
• Discuss any possible side effects or complications associated with surgery
• Complete and sign paperwork to eliminate the need on the day of surgery

Pre-Anesthesia Blood Work
Prior to any anesthesia, blood work is completed to ensure that the liver and kidneys are healthy enough to handle anesthetic. Blood work can identify undetected conditions that may cause complications if left untreated. The veterinarian will also use the results in customizing your pet's anesthesia and pain management protocol.

A skilled veterinary technician stays with your pet from the moment he or she is placed under anesthesia until fully alert after the surgery is completed. During the surgical procedure, blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and respiration rate are closely monitored.

Pre- and Post-Surgical Pain Management
VCA Cordova Veterinary Hospital will help your pet be as comfortable as possible. Our trained staff will work to create a pain management protocol tailored to your pet. Your veterinarian will review with you any medications, treatments, or restrictions included in your pet's pain management plan.

Important Before-Surgery Instructions

• Remove your pet's food starting at 10 p.m. the day before surgery
• Your pet can have water before surgery
• Check-in is between 8 and 9 a.m. the morning of the procedure
• Please tell our staff of any medications your pet has been given 24 hours prior to surgery

In addition to the trained veterinarians on our staff, Dr. Erin Paster, a Diplomate of the College of Veterinary Surgery, is available to perform many specialized soft tissue or advanced surgical procedures, including bone plating and TPLO surgery for cruciate repair.
