Shannon Reed-Herrick, Staff Veterinarian

BVM&S

Dr. Reed is 'almost' a Native, arriving in Colorado at the ripe old age of 3 days old. Her father was a human general practitioner in the Winter Park, Granby area, where she spent the first 10 years of her life. Her parents then moved the family to Oklahoma, and while that was a wonderful place to live and grow up, Colorado and the mountains have always been 'home'.
Animal welfare and the desire to take care of animals came at a very early age, with parents constantly having to monitor her bedroom 'Clinic' for a variety of injured animals. It was around 5 years of age that the family veterinarian helped her realize that her desire to care for animals was a profession that she could pursue in her future.

But as life would have it, Dr. Reed didn't pursue her Veterinary degree until a bit later in life, choosing to travel and experience life through other professions, including sailing the Caribbean, Bahamas & Eastern seaboard via working on privately owned yachts.
In 2008 she achieved her Undergraduate Degree in Animal Science with an emphasis in Equids, from the University of California, Davis. Desiring the opportunity to live abroad she chose to study veterinary medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. graduating with a BVM&S (Veterinary Doctorate Degree) in 2012. This esteemed University is one of the oldest veterinary universities in the world with its first regular classes at the school commencing in November 1823 as well as currently being one of the world's top 20 universities.

After graduating she returned to Colorado with her husband, Steve, and well-traveled group of merry varied animals: Sky and Gentry (horses), 'Ippie & Gallagher', (two cats aka. The Rulers of the Kingdom) and the most noble Finnegan an Australian Shepherd, and prince of a fella.
Dr. Reed then pursued a solo, mobile mixed animal practice (treating anything from small animals to horses, cattle, sheep, goats, llamas/alpacas etc.) which she enjoyed tremendously. The diversity and challenge of the medicine, independence and opportunity to establish incredible bonds with her clients and their beloved pets drew her to this type of practice.  However, the rigors of a solo practice and her desire to pursue specifically small animal medicine and surgery have drawn her into companion animal medicine.

She is very excited to be here for a variety of reasons, including the opportunity to establish and develop strong collaborative relationships with her clients and patients. She strongly believes that this can only be achieved through open & cooperative dialogue with the shared desire to provide the very best fear-free medicine possible, for the client and pets best interest always considered first and foremost. This is the only way to ensure we develop long term, trust-based relationships which endure for the life of the pet and hopefully through many other generations of furry family members!
When Dr. Reed isn't at work having an amazing time, she loves to go for trail rides on her horses, exploring the incredible Colorado outdoors, going for hikes with her beloved dogs as well as getting to spend some time with her husband, Steve, either kayaking, skiing or when lucky traveling to the ocean and doing some sailing...
