Martha DeWees, Staff Veterinarian

DVM

Dr. DeWees received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine, with honors, from Michigan State University in 1971. She has practiced in the Eugene/Springfield area since graduation and started the first Mobile Veterinary Clinic in the area in 1975. In 1978, she established the McKenzie Animal Hospital and in 2002 more than doubled the hospital size with the new addition and renovation of the existing facility. The hospital has maintained certification as a member hospital by the American Animal Hospital Association since 1979. Dr. DeWees serves as hospital Administrator, small animal practitioner, and employs 3 associate veterinarians and a staff of 25.

Dr. DeWees has special interests in Staff Development, Feline Medicine, Dentistry, Behavior, and Complementary Medicine. Dr. DeWees was named Veterinarian of the Year 2000 by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) for her exceptional contributions to and active involvement in local, state, and regional veterinary associations. She received the OVMA’s highest honor – the Meritorious Service Award in 2001 for her many contributions to the profession including chairing the continuing education committee for the OVMA for more than 20 years, representing the OVMA on the board of directors of the Wild West Veterinary Conference and serving as Oregon VMA delegate to the AVMA for several years. Dr. DeWees was appointed to the Veterinary Medical Examining Board in 1998 and served 8 years. She has been active in her community serving as president of the Emergency Veterinary Hospital for eight years, during which time she supervised the relocation and building of the new facility in 1996 and the remodeling project. Dr. DeWees has served in every office in the Lane County Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. DeWees lives on a farm with her husband, Jonny. Her hobbies include flying, raising purebred polled Hereford Cattle, dog obedience training, and basenji rescue.
