VCA Newark Animal Hospital Information on Hospital Admission, Visitation and Communication

We will provide you with a written estimate/treatment plan of the proposed cost of hospitalization and/or surgery at the time of admission of your pet. Please understand this is only an estimate range and may not reflect the final cost. The cost and treatment of your pet may change due to the results of diagnostic procedures such as blood tests, radiographs, surgery or other types of diagnostics needed, as well as the response of your pet to treatment and/or medications. The charges on your estimate and the charges on your final invoice may be different. Services on the estimate may not appear on the final invoice and vice-versa. We will make every effort to keep you informed of the cost being incurred if the charges exceed the high-end range of your estimate.

Hospitalization is charged in the following manner:

  1. Hospitalization is billed in increments of 4 hours up to 12 hours. The charge per 4 to 12-hour period varies with size, species of animal, level of monitoring and level of intensive care provided to the patient. Special accommodations such as isolation or an incubator incur additional fees.
  2. Less than 4 hours in the Hospital is considered partial day hospitalization and billed at a lower rate.

When your pet is admitted for surgery:

  1. All drop-offs must be between the hours of 7 am and 8 am unless otherwise arranged with your doctor.
  2. The doctor may not be able to speak with you at the time you drop off your pet, as they may be busy assessing and treating hospitalized patients. If you have a question the technician may be able to answer it or they can relay the question to the doctor. The doctor will attempt to contact you prior to surgery to answer your questions. The doctor or technician will call you when the procedure is finished to let you know how everything went.
  3. Sometimes there are complicated or multiple questions regarding the procedure. In this case, please make an appointment with the doctor so we can have adequate time to explain and answer your questions. Unfortunately, the doctors will not have adequate time on the morning of surgery to give your questions the attention they deserve. There is a charge associated with consultation visits/office visits.

When your pet is admitted for Emergency Care or Hospitalization:

  1. We will provide you with an estimate of the cost of hospitalization. Please refer to the first paragraph located above for an explanation of estimates, treatment plans and hospitalization charges.
  2. You will hear from a doctor at least once daily concerning your pet's health status and the results of various diagnostics. The doctors usually will call between 10 am and 11 am. We understand you are anxious to hear about your pet. Between 8 am and 10 am the doctors are examining your pet and other hospitalized patients and may not be available to speak with you. If possible please try to avoid calling during this time. If there is a significant change in your pet's condition a doctor will contact you immediately regardless of the time unless you specify a time period you do not want to be called.
  3. If your pet is admitted for overnight care only and will be transferring out to your regular veterinarian in the morning, you must arrange transportation for the transfer and your pet will need to be picked up by 9 am. Otherwise, you will be charged for an additional increment of hospitalization. We will give you the necessary medical information to take to your veterinarian and they will answer any medical questions you may have.

Visitation Information:

  1. The decision to visit your pet is a personal one. We do encourage you to visit, especially if your pet is to be hospitalized for an extended period of time.
  2. Visitation Hours are Monday through Friday between 10 am - 11 am and 6 pm - 7 pm. Due to the increased number of patients admitted to the hospital on Saturday and Sunday, visitation must be by appointment only. If these times conflict with your schedule please discuss an alternative plan with your doctor.
  3. Visits are limited to 30 minutes. This prevents your pet form missing any scheduled treatments that are critical to your pet's recovery.
  4. Doctors and technicians may not be available to discuss your pet's condition while you are visiting. They are very busy monitoring and performing treatments on our hospitalized patients, examining new patients and performing their daily duties. Please address any questions you have when your pet's doctor calls.
  5. It may be necessary for you to wait to visit your pet when the hospital is extremely busy. The technicians are not only responsible for helping you visit but are responsible for minute-by-minute care of all of the patients in the hospital. Patient care, including that of your pet, must take priority in order to deliver the best possible care. Your patience is greatly appreciated.
  6. Due to the alarming condition of some patients present to our hospital, such as a hit-by car, gunshot wound, or other life threatening condition, you may be asked to leave the treatment/hospital area. Once we have stabilized the patient you will be able to return.

Thank you for allowing us to care for your pet. Please let us know if we may assist you in anyway during your pet's stay.
