Dr. Atkins received a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She spent her last semester aboard Voyager, a ship for the Semester at Sea program, circumnavigating the globe to allow firsthand experience of cultural and humanitarian issues. She then received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Tennessee. After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Atkins completed a private practice internship in small animal medicine, surgery and emergency services at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital in San Diego, California, followed by a three-year private practice veterinary ophthalmology residency program in Annapolis, Maryland. Dr. Atkins then completed 3 years in private practice in Northern California, becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. We are excited to have Dr. Atkins join the team.

Ophthalmology

A veterinary ophthalmologist is also equipped to diagnose and treat diseases that affect the structures surrounding the eye, such as the eyelids, conjunctiva, and some of the bones of the skull that comprise the eye socket.
