Simon Starkey, Associate Veterinarian

BVSc, PhD, D.ABVP (Avian)

Dr. Starkey completed his veterinary training at the University of Sydney in December 2001. During his time at Australia’s oldest veterinary school he undertook an additional one-year full-time clinical research project investigating feline diabetes. He then moved to Ithaca, New York to begin advanced graduate studies in epidemiology and preventive veterinary medicine at Cornell University. After receiving his Ph.D. from Cornell, he continued his studies with a two-year residency program in avian medicine and surgery. After successfully completing the program, Dr. Starkey became a board-certified avian veterinarian in November 2008. He served as examination vice-chair for the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners’ (ABVP) avian specialty program for two-years after being admitted into the organization.

Following his time at Cornell, he practiced avian and exotic pet medicine in Manhattan at a practice solely focused on the care of these pets. He then practiced in Queens and on Long Island for 2 years where he saw predominantly cats and dogs as he grew the avian side of the practice before moving to Arizona in 2012.

Dr. Starkey then spent five years working at the corporate headquarters of one of the world’s largest pet retailers. During this time he was responsible for creating, editing and presenting cat and dog health and wellness education for store associates and pet owners across the country. He also managed the health and wellbeing of tens of thousands of birds located within the retailer’s 1,200 stores across North America.

Dr. Starkey is proud to be the capital district’s only board-certified bird veterinarian and his practice is limited to canine and feline general practice as well as primary care and specialty medicine and surgery for birds.
