Dr. Latoya Schultz-Powell was born and raised in Guyana, South America where she spent the first 11 years of her life surrounded by nature. Having declared her desire to become a Veterinarian from the age of 6, she focused her time during High School in Brooklyn New York and Undergraduate at Cornell University on gaining experience working with everything from raptors to cows. She attended Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 2009 with a focus on Zoo and Wildlife Medicine. She spent the 1st year in private practice in Hershey, Pennsylvania and has been practicing Veterinary Medicine in Durham, North Carolina since May of 2010. She still resides in Durham with her husband Brian (a herpetologist) and their 2 cats, 2 snakes, 2 lizards and 1 dove. Her professional interests include exotic animal medicine, parasitology and pharmacology. In her spare time she enjoys hiking and camping with her husband and trying out new recipes. She is extremely excited to join the VCA team and shares their commitment to individualized quality patient care. She loves getting to know her clients as it helps her understand her patients better and looks forward to forming new bonds with both new and established clientele. She loves to share what she knows so be ready to learn a lot in your appointment!
