Obedience Training

Over 30 years ago, VCA Willow Creek Dog Training opened its doors to the pet community. Our goal was and still is to help solve your dog training problems and make your pet the best family member possible. Our instructors have years of experience with hundreds of dogs and people. We have developed a program that is adaptable to all breeds and most temperaments of dogs. Our core belief revolves around teaching basic concepts that apply to all dogs – impulse control, manners and appropriate socialization.

All of this starts with helping you develop a strong relationship with your dog. This is based on being consistent and fair when teaching your furry companion skills that will improve his life and help him be the best he can be.

All classes run 6 weeks for one hour each week. Classes are small in size, 6-8 dogs, to ensure you and your pet receive the personalized attention needed from a trainer. Each class focuses on:

  • Creating a system of communication between you and your dog
  • Giving tools to build a strong relationship between dog and owner
  • Teaching impulse control so your dog will be able to think before acting
  • Improving your dog’s manners at home and in public

Private lessons are also available on a limited basis. Call for details: 801-942-0777.

Puppy Kindergarten is all about introducing your puppy to basic concepts of impulse control, manners and socialization. We help you lay the foundation for a trusting relationship. During socialization time, puppies are able to interact with different people and other puppies, which teaches correct behavior and confidence. This class covers:

  • Managing puppy behaviors, such as potty training, teething/bite inhibition, sleeping though the night/crate training
  • Developing communication and understanding starting with basic manners like “sit”, “down”, “come” (recalls) and “off” (no jumping)
  • Teaching impulse control – teaching your puppy to think before he acts
  • Appropriate play and socialization with other puppies and new people

Puppy Kindergarten starts with an open discussion time where you can bring up questions you may have. Our instructors are happy to answer and help you with challenges you are having with your puppy. We keep our classes small, 6-8 puppies, so we can give you individual attention. We will do our best to get you on the right path to being a great pet owner.

Beginning Dog Obedience

Beginning Obedience takes basic concepts like impulse control, manners and proper socialization, and helps you work with your dog to improve these skills. This class is perfect for adolescent dogs and older dogs who need a better understanding of basic commands and how to respond to them when distractions are present. It increases the trust part of your relationship with your dog by helping you communicate in a clear and consistent manner so that your dog understands what he is expected to do. This class covers:

  • Helping your dog improve handler focus and listening skills
  • Teaching important life skill manners, like leash walking and heeling, polite greeting with other dogs and people, “stay”, “wait” and “off”
  • Improving impulse control by helping your dog with his decision making skills using the paycheck principle – your dog does what you ask him to do so he can get something he wants (coming for a reward, or sitting when greeting a person so he can be released to say “hi”)
  • Proper socialization with people and other dogs – knowing when to “say hi” and when to “leave it”

Beginning Obedience stars with open discussion about training needs and concerns for your dog. Class sizes are between 6-8 dogs, which gives time to go over questions and training concepts with your instructor. Our goal is to help you improve your relationship with your dog, and improve his self-control and manners. This class is the perfect place to work on those skills.
