True or False: Pollen allergies in pets typically cause sneezing and watery, red eyes
Answer: False
Pets can have allergies to tree or grass pollens, just like some people have hay fever or ragweed allergies.
But unlike people, pets don’t sneeze or have watery, red eyes when they encounter these allergens. Pets respond differently and often develop skin inflammation called atopy or atopic dermatitis. Signs of atopy included chronic or recurrent itching and the pet may also have a history of recurrent skin and/or ear infections. Often pets are so itchy that they create trauma to their skin. Atopy can develop during any life stage, so if you notice your pet has started scratching, take them to your veterinarian for an assessment and appropriate treatment.
