Our hospital offers education on parasite control. Fleas are the most common external parasite affecting cats, and are capable of transmitting infection and disease through bites. Many cats also suffer from severe allergic reaction to flea bites. Internal parasites (such as worms) are capable of causing severe illness, as well as transmitting disease to humans. We recommend that owners apply a broad-spectrum anti-parasitic medication such as Paradyne on a monthly basis to protect cats from these parasites in order to maintain their health.
In addition, because of the risk posed by intestinal parasites to both cats and people, all cats should have at least one fecal examination per year to test for intestinal parasites (e.g., roundworms, hookworms, Giardia).
