Dr. Donald M. Shellenberger has been serving the Lancaster community with expert and compassionate veterinary care for decades. He began his academic journey at Pennsylvania State University, majoring in Animal Science. Thanks to his outstanding academic performance, he was accepted into the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine after just three years of undergraduate study. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science after his first year of veterinary school and graduated with his Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMS) degree in 1977.
Dr. Shellenberger was one of the original partners of Smoketown Veterinary Hospital, where he later served as president. His leadership helped shape the hospital's commitment to excellence, and he remains especially proud of the dedicated staff and high standard of medicine practiced at Smoketown. He is also an owner and board member of PETS Emergency Hospital in Lancaster, further demonstrating his commitment to providing trusted care when pets need it most.
In practice, Dr. Shellenberger has a special interest in dermatology, reproduction, and soft tissue surgery, and he finds great joy in helping animals live healthier happier lives.
When not practicing veterinary medicine, Dr. Shellenberger enjoys spending time with his wife, Ann Wert Shellenberger, who he married in 1968. Together they have raised three daughters and are proud grandparents of eight grandsons and one granddaughter. Much of their family time is spent at their beloved Raystown Doolittle Den, where they enjoy boating, entertaining friends, cooking, and watching just about any kind of sport.
An avid traveler and nature enthusiast, Dr. Shellenberger also enjoys bird-watching and exploring new places. Some of the most memorable destinations he and Ann have visited include Tanzania, South Africa, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Finland, Alaska, and Hawaii.
