Local Medical Issues

The Pacific Northwest is home to many infectious diseases and parasites that we'd like our clients to be aware of. If you would like any additional information about protecting your pets, we would be happy to talk with you!

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease that pets and people contract when coming into contact with water contaminated by the urine of infected wildlife. Dogs most commonly contract this disease from drinking out of puddles, lakes, streams, and fountains. The early signs of this disease include fever and muscle aches, but it can quickly progress to anemia and/or kidney failure. We recommend the available vaccine against the most common serovars of Leptospirosis.

Giardia is a parasite that is contracted from ingesting the feces of infected animals or drinking from contaminated water. Most commonly, animals infected with Giardia will experience a varying severity of diarrhea. Giardia is diagnosed with a test run on a fecal sample and is easily treated. The Giardia cysts, however, may persist in the environment, so your pet will need to be bathed and his/her bedding washed to prevent re-infection. If your pet is prone to corporophagia (the eating of feces), you will need to prevent this in order to prevent re-infection.

Fleas are a frequent concern among owners in the Northwest. A large number of pets suffer from flea allergies, and fleas can also transmit tapeworms. We recommend monthly flea prevention for all pets, and will be happy to discuss the various available products. Flea collars, flea dips, and over-the-counter flea products are not recommended, as they may be toxic to your pets and to the humans in your household.
