What is neomycin ophthalmic?
Neomycin ophthalmic is an antimicrobial medication, usually in a combination product, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye. It is used to treat surface eye infections in cats, dogs, and exotic companion animals. Neomycin ophthalmic is most often combined with other antimicrobials (e.g., triple antibiotic ophthalmic) to create a combination product. This medication may be combined with a topical steroid.
It may be used “off label” or “extra label” to treat other types of eye infections. Many drugs are commonly prescribed for off-label use in veterinary medicine. In these instances, follow your veterinarian’s directions and cautions carefully.
How do I give my pet neomycin ophthalmic?
Neomycin ophthalmic comes in an ointment or liquid eye drop suspension form.
- Ointments and liquid drops are given topically, directly into the eye.
- Wash your hands before giving your pet this medication.
- Do not allow the dropper tip to touch your animal’s eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
- If you are administering more than one eye medication to your pet, wait 5 to 10 minutes between each medication. Give eye drops before eye ointments.
- Give this medication to your pet for the entire time prescribed by your veterinarian, even if it appears that your pet is feeling better.
What if I miss giving my pet the medication?
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember and then continue with the regular dosing schedule. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.
