Dr. Evan Emmel has been a staff emergency veterinarian at VCA VREC since August 2020. He was raised in Naperville, Illinois and attended the University of Illinois for both undergraduate and veterinary school. His undergraduate training included a major in Animal Sciences with a minor in chemistry. After graduating from veterinary school in 2018, he completed a small animal rotating internship at VCA VREC in Norwalk and VCA Shoreline in Shelton, Connecticut. He then returned to the University of Illinois to complete a one year specialty internship in Anesthesiology and Pain Management of all veterinary species.
In addition to working in small animal emergency medicine, he has special interest in zoological and conservation medicine and serves as a veterinarian at the Maritime Aquarium. He has published conservation-oriented research in forums such as the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, and continues to be involved in research studies in his spare time. He also enjoys playing guitar, paddleboarding, hiking, cooking, and spending time with his crested gecko, Stevie Ray.
