Train your cat to walk on a leash
Leash walking is a great way to provide your cat with the exercise and mental stimulation of exploring beyond your home, all while keeping them safe from outdoor hazards such as cars and other animals.
The key to walking your cat is to let them set the pace. Cats are quite unique individuals, which means that leash walking may look very different for each one.
Some cats, especially if they are started young, may love their walks and set a good pace for you. But some may actually hate the idea and refuse to step out the front door. Many will fall somewhere in the middle, meandering about the neighborhood with frequent stops to sit and watch the world go by.
Cats also need a little bit more training than dogs to figure out leash walking. Follow these steps over several training sessions to get your cat ready for their walks:
Remember, although this is the safest way to allow your cat to enjoy outdoor time, it can increase your cat’s chances of interacting with a stray animal or picking up fleas and ticks.
Before heading outside, be sure to update your cat’s vaccinations and protect them with parasite prevention. You can easily check your cat’s vaccine status and refill their parasite prevention on the myVCA app.
