Who in Black History do you look up to and why?

Michelle Obama is one of my most admired African American women. She is a wife, mother, lawyer, author, and former first lady of the United States. Many of us came to know Mrs. Obama as the first lady who prioritized and focused her attention on social issues such as poverty, healthy living, ending childhood obesity, and education. However, her commitment to these and other worthwhile initiatives began prior to her role as the first lady.

Her commitment to her children and family as well as her personal commitment to education are truly inspiring. Mrs. Obama demonstrated these commitments and led by example when she graduated cum laude from Princeton University and studied law at Harvard Law School. Well before her key contributions to “Let Girls Learn,” a government initiative to help girls around the world to attend and stay in school, Mrs. Obama modeled hard work and dedication in her home. Moreover, it was her commitment to public service in her early years, working to help young adults develop skills for future careers in the public sector, and most recently empowering women through her book “Becoming,” which served as a launching pad and the wind in my sail to continue in the pursuit of my personal and professional goals.
