Endoscopy

If your pet is suffering from a problem that requires closer examination, we may suggest endoscopy. Endoscopy is used chiefly for diagnostic procedures, but it is also used for other valuable procedures.

Endoscopy also provides a means to take biopsies and can be used to remove foreign objects from the esophagus and stomach. In addition, it can be used to repair areas of the colon or esophagus that may have narrowed due to scar tissue formation. We often use endoscopy in cases of severe pneumonia to get a good look, biopsies, and bacterial cultures of the respiratory tract.

We are always pleased to employ a solution like endoscopy since it can replace more invasive and painful surgeries and procedures.

What is an endoscope?
An endoscope is a flexible tube with a light and a viewing port or a video camera attachment. It is inserted into the area to be viewed and the image can be seen through a port or on a video screen. Biopsy and grasping forceps can be deployed through the endoscope. Many organs that have openings to the outside of the patient can be evaluated using the endoscope.

Endoscopy allows us to see and often times treat many internal structures of your pet’s body, including the:

  • Stomach
  • Intestine
  • Esophagus
  • Nasal system
  • Urinary system

Will the endoscopic procedure be painful?
Endoscopy is nonsurgical and noninvasive, but it does require general anesthesia. Your pet will be pain free and unaware during the entire procedure. Recovery is minimal and your pet goes home with you the same day.

We will go over preparation for endoscopy and discuss the procedure and results with you in detail.
