Our Team

Our staff of client service representatives, veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and doctors are here to serve you and your pets.

Client service representatives or CSRs help you schedule, answer questions, check-in and check-out patients, handle payment collections, coordinate the day, and present your questions and updates to the doctors for consideration.

VCA Big Lake employs licensed technicians and veterinary assistants to uphold the standard of nursing care your pets deserve. Key roles include anesthesia induction and maintenance under doctor supervision, dental hygiene, radiology, phlebotomy (lab sample collection), lab processing, surgery preparation and operating room O/R assistance, housekeeping, patient treatments, history collection, and client education.

Technician assistants keep the practice flowing by helping with patient treatments, assisting with patient monitoring, surgery preparation, patient handling, housekeeping, supply turn-around, patient care, and ward duties.

paw Team Spotlight
Margot Ulsom
DVM Medical Director
Dr. Margot Fairbanks Ulsom grew up in Connecticut, obtained her undergraduate degree in Biology at Columbia College in NYC and then went on to UCD Veterinary School in Dublin, Ireland. After graduating in 2013, she started her career working as a mixed animal practitioner in Wyoming and later in Montana. In 2017, she moved to Alaska and made the switch to small animal medicine and emergency care. She joined us at VCA Big Lake in 2021 and became Medical Director of the hospital in 2022.

Her primary interests include soft tissue surgery, internal medicine and emergency care, but she enjoys most aspects of the veterinary field. She has a profound compassion for the human/animal bond and appreciates being a positive contributor to that relationship.

Outside of work, Dr. Ulsom enjoys many of the activities that the magnificent Great Land has to offer with her husband, son, Border Collie and kennel of Alaskan Huskies.
Rachel Turner
Hospital Manager

I am Rachel Turner of Wasilla, Alaska. I was born in Bitburg, Germany, while my father was stationed there in the Air Force. I grew up mostly in Alaska where I graduated high school from Chugiak High School. After high school, I worked as a Veterinary Technician in both Alaska and Oregon, where I worked with animals ranging from snakes, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, birds, dogs and cats. I have owned all sorts of reptiles including Florida alligators and a prairie dog. My love of animals follows me today with my 200 LB great Dane/Mastiff named Jake.

Jake and I share our house with my husband, Jason, and our two children, Breanna (15) and Cody (14). I also have a stepdaughter, Sierra, who is on active duty in the Navy and about to bless us with our first grandson in April. Our family enjoys gold mining, fishing, and camping. When we are in town, my husband and I are active dart players looking to win our way back to nationals in Las Vegas. I have been in the Human Services field working with individuals with disabilities and veterans who need PCA services for the last 10 years as a program director. I look forward to getting back into the animal world that I love and missed so much.
