get to know your kitten

Your kitten is your best friend, and there’s no way you don’t know your best friend like the back of your own hand, right?

Okay, so we don’t doubt that you know your kitten very well—you know them better than anyone! But these 4 kitten facts might teach you something new about your bestie.

  1. Your kitten is lactose intolerant. After weaning, many cats lose the enzyme that allows them to digest lactose. So don’t feed your kitten milk! You might upset their tummy.
  2. Your kitten probably makes “stink face” because they’re processing pheromones. You know what “stink face” we mean. They get that glazed look in their eye and hold their mouth open a little bit. It’s called a flehmen response, and if you’re not familiar, we highly recommend looking up photos. Your kitten is not just making this face because something smells bad! They are passing air into their vomeronasal organ (Jacobson’s organ), which is at the base of their nasal cavity. It’s thought to be like tasting and smelling the “scent” at the same time. Cats usually make this face in response to pheromones from their own species, though you might also see them do it in response to other intriguing odors.
  3. Your kitten might like water…on their own terms. You may have heard that kittens don’t like to get wet. While it’s true that they’re often resistant to submerging in water, some cats are known to jump into bathtubs with their owners, lie in sinks, react positively to spray bottles or bat at water from the faucet.
  4. Your kitten isn’t going to be disoriented if their whiskers come off. Your kitten does use their whiskers as a tool for navigating, particularly in the dark or in small spaces, so we don’t recommend intentionally removing them. But if your kitten’s whiskers are ever lost due to an injury (or your kitten doesn’t have them), they’re not automatically going to be off-balance.
