What are cat zoomies?
The cat zoomies appear as a period of hyperactivity in which the cat displays frenzied running and pouncing. Some cats will meow during their cat zoomies. Cat zoomies may be a representation of pent-up energy or a cat that isn’t getting enough mental stimulation. Some cats will get zoomies when their predatory instincts are kicking in, and some will have a short bout of zoomies after using the litter box. It’s also possible that your kitten is just acting silly and playful, or it might just be—it might just be part of their personality!The zoomies occur more frequently in kittens, but your young cat might get a kick out of the occasional zoomies, too. This is normal cat behavior throughout life!
How to encourage the zoomies
If you want to encourage the zoomies, you’ll want to encourage it during the daytime. Nighttime zoomies can lead to sleepless nights for you. Daytime zoomies and mental stimulation may decrease the nighttime zoomies.
You can encourage this playful behavior by encouraging your young cat’s natural hunting and predatory behaviors. Laser pointers, fetch with a favorite toy or chasing after particularly delicious treats are good ways to encourage zoomie-like behavior. Some cats may also develop the zoomies after exposure to catnip.
If your cat is experiencing an abnormal increase in activity or becoming aggressive during their zoomie sessions, speak with your VCA care team to rule out medical conditions, like hyperthyroidism, that could contribute to hyperactivity. But in most cases, your kitten’s zoomies just mean they’re feeling playful! Enjoy it!
