Your puppy is your best friend, and there’s no way you don’t know your best friend like the back of your own hand, right?
Okay, so we don’t doubt that you know your puppy very well—you know them better than anyone! But these 4 puppy facts might teach you something new about your bestie!
- Your puppy is probably not 3 and a half in human years. You may have heard that in 1 year, a dog ages about 7 human years. This isn’t necessarily true. In fact, your 6-month-old puppy could be closer to a preteen human, especially if they’re a small breed.
- Your puppy isn’t colorblind. Dogs don’t see all the same colors we do, but their vision allows for shades of blue, yellow and gray. Even though your puppy’s vision develops until they‘re over 2 months old, they are unlikely to ever have 20/20 daytime vision. However, they will see better than you at night.
- Your puppy’s mouth isn’t cleaner than a human mouth. Dogs and humans have around the same number of bacteria in their mouths. Although it’s rare, your dog could theoretically transmit infections to you through their saliva. But this doesn’t mean you have to say no to puppy kisses! People have thick skin, and those of us without allergies to dogs tolerate puppy kisses very well. However, letting your puppy lick at wounds isn’t a good choice.
- Yawning doesn’t always mean your puppy is sleepy. Dogs commonly yawn when they’re anxious, stressed or just generally “done.” If you notice your puppy yawning when someone plays with or pets them, you might consider redirecting them to a less stressful activity, or distracting your anxious puppy with a training session and treats.
