Safe spring cleaning with your dog

The snow is melting, flowers are beginning to bloom and spring is finally in the air! As you gear up for your seasonal deep clean, don’t forget to consider your canine friend’s space—and safety. Since your dog may be stressed while their bed or favorite toys are being washed, it may be helpful to distract them when you’re cleaning these items.

Here are some tips to keep your home fresh and your pup happy while you tackle your spring cleaning checklist.

What cleaners are safe for dogs?

When selecting cleaning products, always prioritize your dog’s safety. Avoid cleaners containing ammonia, bleach or alkaline substances, as these can irritate your pet’s skin, eyes and respiratory system. Instead, opt for pet-safe alternatives labeled non-toxic. Wondering what floor cleaners are safe for dogs? Look for products made with natural ingredients like vinegar or baking soda, ensuring no harmful residue is left behind.

Laundry time!

Pet owners may wonder how often to wash dog beds. Your pup’s bed is their haven to snuggle and snooze—but it’s also a haven for fur, dirt and bacteria! It’s important to wash it regularly—at least once every two weeks. Start by vacuuming off loose fur and debris, followed by a wash using a non-toxic detergent. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions or these steps, depending on the type of bed:

• For removable covers, toss the cover in the washing machine on the hottest setting.

• For non-removable covers, hand-wash the bed, allowing it to soak for 10-15 minutes. Rinse it thoroughly, wring out the excess water and allow it to dry outside in the sun.

Is it safe to wash dog toys?

Absolutely! Just like dog bedding, dog toys can harbor bacteria. They can also be a breeding ground for fungi and yeast. Thoroughly wash the toys you (or your dog) want to keep and toss those that are looking a little worse for wear. But is it safe to wash dog toys with detergent? Yes, as long as you choose a mild, non-toxic detergent and rinse well.

Are KONG dog toys dishwasher safe?

For rubber toys like KONGs, a quick scrub with soap and water works wonders. If you’d prefer to use your dishwasher, KONG rubber toys are top-rack dishwasher safe; however, skip the drying cycle, as excess heat can damage the toy. Check the manufacturer’s instructions first.

Spring cleaning is a great way to refresh your home, but it’s important to keep your dog’s safety in mind every step of the way. By using pet-safe products, regularly washing their bedding and toys and staying mindful of potential hazards, you can create a clean, healthy environment for your dog.
