Train your cat to walk on a leash

  cat leash training

Leash walking is a great way to provide your cat with the exercise and mental stimulation of exploring beyond your home, all while keeping them safe from outdoor hazards such as cars and other animals.

The key to walking your cat is to let them set the pace. Cats are quite unique individuals, which means that leash walking may look very different for each one.

Some cats, especially if they are started young, may love their walks and set a good pace for you. But some may actually hate the idea and refuse to step out the front door. Many will fall somewhere in the middle, meandering about the neighborhood with frequent stops to sit and watch the world go by.

Cats also need a little bit more training than dogs to figure out leash walking. Follow these steps over several training sessions to get your cat ready for their walks:

  • Purchase the right harness and leash. Cats should always be walked on a harness, since collars are too easily slipped off. Make sure to size the harness so your cat can’t wiggle out of it. Avoid retractable or long leashes that may allow your cat to run up trees or over fences.
  • Start by using the harness indoors. Get your cat used to the feel of the harness by offering lots of treats and love while they are wearing it.
  • Add in the leash indoors. Attach the leash to the harness and follow your cat around the house so that they become comfortable with the weight of the leash as well.
  • Gently lead your cat indoors. With very gentle pressure (never drag your cat!) and plenty of luring with treats, get your cat to start following you around the house.
  • Step out the front door. Now encourage your cat to follow you outside. Make these first few outings very short, just around your driveway or front yard before returning.
  • Slowly increase walk lengths. Over time, encourage your cat to go a little farther and be a little more adventurous. Soon you two will have a regular walking routine!

Remember, although this is the safest way to allow your cat to enjoy outdoor time, it can increase your cat’s chances of interacting with a stray animal or picking up fleas and ticks.

Before heading outside, be sure to update your cat’s vaccinations and protect them with parasite prevention. You can easily check your cat’s vaccine status and refill their parasite prevention on the myVCA app.
