Tips to stop your pet’s diarrhea in its tracks
Our pets have a way of getting into—and eating!—lots of odd things, so it’s no wonder that diarrhea is such a common pet issue. But diarrhea can also be caused by plenty of other problems, like parasites, allergies, inflammatory bowel disease and more. So what should you do when your pet gets the runs?
This step-by-step guide will steer you in the right direction no matter the cause of your pet’s loose stools:
1. Assess the situation
If your pet is also lethargic, refusing food, vomiting or has blood in their stool, don't try to deal with this case of the runs at home—book an appointment right away.
2. Submit a fecal test
Next, collect a stool sample for a fecal test, which will check for worms and other parasites or bacteria that might be causing the problem. The stool needs to be fairly fresh, so although it may not be the most pleasant thing, try to collect a sample right after your pet has gone to the bathroom.
3. Start a bland diet
While you wait for the fecal test results, soothe your pet’s stomach with a bland diet, which you can get as prescription food from your veterinarian or make at home. Once your pet is feeling better, remember to gradually switch them back to their regular diet to avoid irritating their stomach with a sudden change.
4. Pick up medications (if needed)
Based on the fecal test results, your veterinarian may prescribe dewormers or other medications. They may also have additional advice to prevent the same problem in the future.
5. Reassess
If your pet doesn’t improve after a few days on their bland diet or medications, then it’s time to head to the hospital. Any warning signs, like lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting or blood in the stool, should also trigger a veterinary visit.
