Let me start by sharing that I worked for VCA from 1997 through 2000. Back then, there was only the Accounting department (no Corporate Accounting, Revenue Accounting or Hospital Accounting departments). VCA was a growing business with about 180 animal hospitals and each accountant had about 25 animal hospitals for which we did the entire accounting cycle. When I left the company in 2000, I got married, started a family and moved to New York.
I returned to VCA in 2015 after accepting the role of corporate accounting supervisor. Overseeing the accounting and reporting for 401k, health insurance, worker’s compensation and general liability insurance for VCA, Antech, Camp Bow Wow and Sound, was the largest of the many duties of the position. While in this role, Kim grew personally and professionally, learning new things and mentoring staff. After five years in the CAS role, I was promoted to another exciting position as treasury manager. In this role, my team and I support associates in all the aforementioned segments with their Treasury needs.
I am a native of Los Angeles having graduated from Westchester High School with honors and furthering my education, at California State University Dominguez Hills, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Being a member of the Accounting Society and VITA (volunteer income tax assistant) for many years have proven to be valuable in my career path. I reside in Inglewood (near the new SoFi Stadium) with my husband (Jason) of 20 years and my twin sons (Justin and Jordan) who are both college students. Justin is biliterate in Japanese and Jordan is biliterate in Spanish. I recently became a fur-mom to my dog-der (daughter) Razz, a tri-color Jack Russel Terrier!
When I am not working, I love to travel, read books and spend quality time with my beautiful family. I can’t wait to travel to a distant land again, like the Cayman Islands, and curl up with a good book.
Often, I am asked if my name is Kimberly because everyone calls me Kim. Well, Kim (in my case) is short for Akimba. It has many meanings in the African and Caribbean regions and can be a unisex name. The Arabic origin of Akimba means “God’s chosen one”.
Black History Month has always been important to my family. My father named me due to his interest in his ancestry, which also became a hobby for me. With help from elder family members and ancestry.com, I have traced my family history all the way to Mississippi and as far back as the 1860s! I also found that my ancestors were farmers, educators, carpenters and businessmen. I realize that knowing my family history has instilled in me a confidence of who I am and a feeling of comfort in any environment. I feel at home at VCA. The fact that VCA has a Black History campaign and that you are reading this bio proves that VCA supports diversity and is why I feel encouraged and supported as I grow in my profession.
