Brian Akau grew up in Mobile, Alabama. He moved to Northern Virginia in 1991. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from VCU. Prior to accepting the hospital manager role with VCA Chancellor in 2023, Brian had been part of the VCA Woodbridge team since 2003. His special interests include emergency and critical care medicine.

Brian lives with his wife Marla, their two children, Jacob and Abigail, two dogs, Lollipop and Patsy Kline, two cats, Sugar Magnolia and Claudius Decimus Meridius. While not at WAH he enjoys golfing and spending time with his family.
