Safe Visit Procedures at VCA Emergency Animal Hospital

Welcome to VCA Emergency Animal Hospital and Referral Center. Please read to learn what protocols we have in place and what we are doing to continue to provide the necessary care for your pet while ensuring you and our staff stay safe during this Covid pandemic.

We understand veterinary care is an essential part of our community and in order to keep our hospital open and provide services to you and your pet, we have implemented specific protocols put forth by state and local guidelines. The health and safety of our clients and our VCA associates remains our top priority.  These currently include but are not limited to curbside check-in, social distancing measures and recommended face coverings in areas where social distancing is not possible.  You may visit our hospital as needed unless you are sick or medically quarantined, and then we ask you that you please use our curbside service. The information below will help you to better understand what to expect when visiting our hospital.

What do I do when I arrive at the hospital?
You will need to make sure you are parked in a numbered parking spot and call 619-299-2400 from your vehicle to get your pet checked-in.
What happens after I call and get checked-in?
A member of our medical team will come out to your vehicle and retrieve your pet. If possible, please remove any personal items (leashes, collars, harnesses, blankets, and clothing) from your pet while you wait for the Team Member to come out to assist you. Cats should remain in carriers at all times. Other pets such as avian and exotic species should remain in their enclosures. Please know we will do our best to get someone to retrieve your pet as soon as possible, but patients with life threatening conditions are prioritized.
What do I do after my pet is taken?

1. Option 1 (Curbside check-in)- If our front desk staff or specialty coordinator has checked you and your pet in, you are welcome to go home and wait for a phone call from one of our staff veterinarians. Please note it can take 2-4 hours for our ER clients depending on the current caseload. All communications will be done via phone/text message. If your pet is unstable and needs immediate treatment, you will receive a call much sooner. If your pet is in a carrier, please ask the Team Member if you should wait for them to return any personal belongings.

Tip: Keep your phone nearby and take off silent/”do not disturb” when waiting for a call back. Please answer any calls beginning with the numbers 619-299. It may be one of our staff members trying to reach you.

2. Option 2 (In person)- Waiting with your pet will now be an option but we will continue to recommend our Curbside check-in whenever possible. Please know that some ER visits can take up to 6 hours or more from the time your pet is checked in to the time they are discharged or admitted to the hospital. When the VCA Team Member arrives at your vehicle, please make them aware you wish to wait with your pet. If your pet is being seen by our ER, we will ask to bring your pet into the hospital to take their vitals and do a quick assessment of their condition. Once those are complete and your pet is considered stable by an associate, your pet will be brought back to you and you will receive a pager. This will notify you when a doctor is ready to speak to you. There will also be times when we will recommend your pet does not stay with you due to their condition (i.e. difficulty breathing, seizure activity, trauma) and would benefit from careful observation from our medical personnel.

If you are being seen by one of our specialists, the coordinator will call and let you know when you’re ready to be seen. In an effort to maintain social distancing while in the hospital, we will have to limit the number of clients allowed in the lobby at a given time.

What should I expect once I’m allowed inside the hospital?
COVID symptoms- Upon check-in, you will be asked by one of our Team Members if you are currently experiencing any COVID related symptoms, if you have tested positive within the last 5 days, or if you have been recently exposed to a person that tested positive for COVID. If you answer yes to any of these questions, you will be asked to use our curbside service. Anyone exhibiting any signs of illness while inside the building will be asked to wait in their vehicle and initiate or resume any further communication with our staff via telephone.

Face coverings- Although face coverings are optional for our clients and staff, we recommend their use when in close contact with others outside of your household. Face masks can be provided to you upon request.

Sanitation procedures- Our commitment to your safety includes protocols that call for frequent hand-washing and hand sanitizing by our staff. We have increased the frequency of cleaning and sanitizing of high touch areas in our lobby, exam rooms, restrooms, and treatment areas. We have contactless hand sanitizers conveniently placed throughout the hospital and encourage you to use these before and after entering an exam room.
