puppy training

Your puppy’s training should always be focused on positive reinforcement, or rewards-based techniques. Punishment in the form of force, pain, fear or discomfort should never be used.

Using punishment in training has been associated with increased aggression and anxiety-related behaviors in the long term. If your puppy finds that they’re getting scared or hurt during training sessions, they’ll be less interested in engaging and will begin to dread what should be a fun bonding time for the two of you.

Training tools to avoid include:

  • Choke chains
  • Prong collars
  • Shock collars
  • Squirt bottles
  • Shaker noise cans
  • Shouting
  • Dominance displays, such as forcing them to roll over
  • Leash jerking

Rather than punishing unwanted behaviors, instead focus on rewarding good behaviors.
Treats, special toys, verbal phrase and physical affection are all great ways to let your puppy know you’re pleased with their behavior.
