Local Medical Issues

There are numerous local medical issues that can impact your pet's health that require your attention over the entire year. For example, there's heartworm, which can affect both cats and dogs. Since it's transmitted by mosquitoes, which thrive in our region, it's a serious cause for concern. And because the winter temperatures here do not get cold enough to kill mosquito eggs, it's a year-round risk. Six percent of the cats we test are positive for heartworm. This blood parasite causes lung disease, vomiting, and sudden death. Because there is no cure for feline heartworm disease, prevention is the key. We recommend testing cats by performing a Wellness Panel yearly, and using heartworm preventative every month. VCA Pet Doctor Animal Hospital carries Feline Revolution.

Like heartworm disease, fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites pose a problem in any season. Allergies are also a year-round issue. Many pets suffer from skin and ear allergies, the signs of which include scratching, redness in the ears, and "scaly" skin.

During 2008 we diagnosed two cases of canine leptospirosis at VCA Pet Doctor Animal Hospital. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection carried by dogs, opossums, skunks, raccoons, deer, and rodents. The bacteria is shed in the animals urine, and is transmissible to people. The most common forms of the disease results in liver or kidney failure. Because of the potential public health risk, we strongly urge all of our clients to protect their dog by using a 4-strain vaccine. Pet's should be tested to protect family members.

We provide digital dental X-rays. These images can provide an early diagnosis of many painful tooth diseases, and an X-ray is the only way to ensure that a tooth has been completely extracted (root fragments can form abscesses). We will provide you with before and after images. If you are considering having your pet's dental work at another hospital, ask if they can provide this level of care.
