Our animal hospital routinely performs electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) recordings as part of our veterinary cardiology services. An ECG is readout of the electrical activity of the animal’s heart and gives our cardiologist information on your pet's heart rate, heart rhythm and potential irregularities called arrhythmias. Although the ECG procedure requires that your pet hold very still for a few minutes to obtain the electrical data, it generally does not require sedation. Several clips (called leads) are placed onto your pet's skin at various body points in order to accurately record the information. Our veterinary cardiologist will use this information, together with other testing to determine the nature and severity of your pet's heart disease and create the best possible treatment plan for an arrhythmia.

Cardiology

Why does my animal need to see a Board-certified Veterinary Cardiologist?

Commonly called Cardiologists, these Specialists focus on diagnosing and treating disease of the heart and lungs, which include:

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Damage to the heart muscle or valves
  • Coughing and other breathing problems
  • Congenital (present at birth) defects
  • Cardiac arrhythmias (problems with the rate and/or rhythm of your animal's heart)

What should I expect during the visit with a Board-certified Veterinary Cardiologist?

The Cardiologist will perform a complete and thorough physical examination on your animal, and based on these initial findings, additional tests will be discussed. Depending on your animal's condition, diagnostic testing or treatments may include:

  • Echocardiography - non-invasive ultrasound imaging of the heart
  • Electrocardiography (ECGs) - electrical reading of the heart's rhythm
  • 24 hour Holter Monitors - 24 hour ECG recording
  • Heart Registry Certification for breeding programs
  • Chest Radiography (x-rays)
