Quick Tips to Keep Your Pup Cool in Hot Weather
When the temperature soars, it's important to take certain precautions to keep your pet safe and hydrated!
- Avoid mid-day walks, when the temperature is usually at its highest. (Hint- check the pavement for heat before taking your dog on a walk! Place your hand or bare foot on the surface for 10 seconds. If it is too hot for you to keep your hand or foot on the pavement, it's too hot for you pet!)
- Make sure they have plenty of access to drinking water
- Keep your dog indoors- let them spend the hottest part of the day in the coolest part of the living space
- On walk, bring water for both you and your pet. If you dog is panting, or seems sluggish, stop in a shady area to offer them water and break to cool down
- Give them cold treats, like frozen, low-sodium beef or chicken broth frozen into ice cubes
- To help your dog cool off after a walk, use a cooling pad, or lay a damp towel down on the floor
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET IN AN UNATTENDED, HOT CAR!
