kitten training

Your kitten is just as smart as any puppy, and they sure do love treats like dogs do. This means your kitten can be trained just as well as a dog!

Aside from being an awesome party trick to show off to your friends, training your kitten has many other benefits. It’s a great way for the two of you to spend time together and bond. Additionally, it’s a great boredom buster for your kitten because their mind will be furiously working to figure out what it is you‘d like them to do.

High five is a great place to start not only because it‘s adorable, but also because it’s a more natural behavior for cats. Other tricks you could teach your kitten include to come, sit, lie down and fetch.

For best success, remember to follow some basic training concepts:

  • Keep training sessions short and sweet. Most cats aren’t as eager to please as dogs.
  • Positive reinforcement is key! Use super yummy treats to reward your kitten for doing something right.
  • Take baby steps. Start by saying the command word and rewarding a behavior that is close to what you‘d like. Then gradually become pickier, rewarding behaviors that are closer and closer to the desired outcome.
  • Always keep it fun! Your kitten should only have positive experiences while training. If you feel yourself getting frustrated from lack of progress, find a different reason to give your kitten a treat and end the session.
  • Practice makes perfect. The more training sessions you do, the more comfortable your kitten will be with their new skill.
