teach kitten to love carrier

Let’s face it: many cats really dislike (dare we say hate?) their carriers, disappearing any time the dreaded contraption comes out. Unfortunately, this can make it really hard to get these cats to the animal hospital, a problem that can become serious if they are ill and need to be seen as soon as possible.

To prevent this from happening, it’s important to work with your kitten from a young age to get them to like the carrier. Not to mention, it could help your kitten to arrive at the hospital in a calm, relaxed state rather than in a tizzy.

The best way to teach your kitten to like the carrier is to make it a positive place for them. In fact, you can turn the carrier into a comfy den. Instead of storing the carrier away, set it in the house somewhere your kitten likes to hang out. Place a blanket and several toys in the carrier and periodically give your kitten treats when they’re inside it. You can even feed your kitten meals in the carrier.

Every now and again, take your kitten in their carrier on a fun trip. You and your kitten can take a ride around the neighborhood, or you could even bring your kitten to your animal hospital for some pets and treats before heading home. This will help your kitten realize that carrier rides don’t always end with them being poked and prodded—sometimes it takes them to fun places, too.

These few simple steps started at a young age can significantly improve your kitten’s experience at the animal hospital for the rest of their life and make it easier for you to ensure they get the veterinary care they need.
