How to train your dog at home
You don’t need expensive training classes or fancy equipment to get started with your dog. While you’re spending more time at home, use these easy tips to teach your dog some new tricks!
Use positive reinforcement for the best results
Positive reinforcement training involves rewarding a desirable behavior so your dog will be more likely to repeat it. Rewards can come in many forms—most people use treats, but some dogs may be willing to work for praise, petting or a favorite toy. The key is to make the reward tempting enough to keep your dog’s attention and to deliver it immediately after a desirable behavior is performed.
Work with your dog regularly
Good dog training is as much about learning to communicate with your dog as it is about teaching your dog to follow commands. Coaching your dog daily—even just for five minutes—will help reinforce the good behaviors you’ve been teaching. Plus, it helps strengthen the bond between you and your dog!
Patience, consistency and repetition
Dog training doesn’t happen overnight. You’ll need to be patient while your dog learns new commands and behaviors. Be clear and consistent with your routine, and make sure the whole family is on board so your dog doesn’t receive any mixed signals. With practice, he’ll soon be the best-trained dog on the block!
Have fun!
Training should never feel tedious or boring. Keep sessions short, upbeat and rewarding for your dog. Try working in new environments and with new people to keep your dog on his toes. Make training a game and you’ll be amazed to see how quickly your dog can learn when he’s having fun!
