Dr. Ella Houweling ("Dr. Howie") joined VCA in September 2025, returning to the Bay Area after spending six years in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she earned her veterinary degree from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh. She also completed a bachelor's degree in Zoology during her time there. Originally from San Francisco, Dr. Howie discovered her passion for veterinary medicine through community outreach in shelters and has loved being part of the profession ever since.
She holds an Undergraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education and enjoys teaching, a passion she developed during veterinary school through peer-led learning. Professionally, she has special interests in anesthesia (especially pain management) and internal medicine.
What she loves most about her job is being there for her community, helping patients through their journey, and, best of all, seeing her patients happy and healthy.
Outside of work, you'll likely find Dr. Howie watching movies, reading, running, or learning how to play tennis! She's also only a speed-dial away from her two tabby cats from her childhood, who are currently living out their best golden years at home.
