Andrew Levien

Dr. Levien is a dual-boarded specialist surgeon with credentials from both the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons. He is the founder of Veterinary Specialists of Sydney (VSOS), where he built a multidisciplinary specialist hospital from the ground up growing it from a solo surgical service into one of Australia's leading referral centers employing 200 staff. Dr. Levien also established Osseovet, focusing on cutting-edge orthopedic solutions such as total hip and elbow replacements, complex fracture repairs, and custom-designed bionic limbs through osseointegration techniques. 

Dr. Levien graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2006. Dr. Levien's surgical training included a rotating internship at the Royal Veterinary College, London (2009/2010), where he was the only non-EU intern accepted that year. This was followed by a surgery internship at Louisiana State University (2010-2011). He then completed a surgical residency at the renowned Animal Medical Center in New York City, where he trained in orthopedics, soft tissue surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and neurosurgery.  

Originally from Sydney, Australia, Dr. Levien has trained and worked across the UK, USA, and Australia, bringing with him a wealth of international experience to our hospital. He has held staff surgeon positions in both Australia and the United States (Washington DC), with a particular interest in complex orthopedics, joint replacement, and spinal surgery. Dr. Levien has performed over 500 total hip replacements, is certified in total elbow and knee replacement techniques, and has contributed to more than 15 peer-reviewed publications in small animal surgery. 

Dr. Levien's professional interests include soft tissue surgery of all kinds, total joint replacement (hip, knee, elbow), cruciate ligament disease-TPLO, arthroscopy, fracture repair, bionic limb development and osseointegration, minimally invasive surgical techniques and mentorship for the advancement of veterinary surgical education. 

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Levien is an avid adventurer, having climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and explored various mountain ranges worldwide. He enjoys playing guitar, following horse racing and is a dedicated rugby league fan. To stay active, he engages in swimming, running, weight training, and skiing. He currently enjoys the company of his rescue coonhound mix, Jesse Pinkman, who was born in North Carolina and was adopted by Dr. Levien in 2015.
