1. What does a typical day look like in your role as the hospital manager for VCA College Park Animal Hospital? What are your regular responsibilities?
  2. A typical day at VCA College Park can really keep us on our toes! Since we’re a general practice, we get to see everything from wellness check-ups to those adorable puppy and kitten vaccine appointments. The excitement doesn’t stop there—we also handle emergency walk-ins when things get a little hectic! Our awesome team at VCA College Park is truly ready to tackle just about any case thrown our way. My role involves keeping an eye on the daily growth and health of the hospital, ensuring that patient care remains our top priority. Plus, I really love connecting with our clients and building that trust. Fostering an engaged team that values learning is super important to me. After all, that's the beauty of our field—there's always something new to learn!

  3. So, you work at a GP hospital during the day and at an ER hospital at night. What different types of occurrences do you experience when you work in an ER hospital as a registered veterinary technician?
  4. Working as a relief registered veterinary technician (RVT) at the nearby ER hospital offers a wide range of cases, from treating gastrointestinal (GI) issues symptomatically to managing those critical situations that require around-the-clock care. It’s great that, when clients have to bring their pets into the ER, I can reassure them because I already know them and their pets. It’s such a joy to provide that extra layer of care for our clients and their pets!

  5. What made you decide to also become an RVT on top of being a veterinary hospital manager?
  6. I have been an RVT for 18 years. I’m passionate about being an advocate for my patients, but I’m also eager to step into the mentor role, helping to uplift the technicians and support staff around me. As a hospital manager, I get to help shape the hospital while also nurturing my team to ensure we provide the very best care for our patients and clients in our community. It’s truly special to support the next generation of technicians as they grow and thrive in this field!

  7. As we are in the midst of the holiday season, what helpful safety tips do you have for pet owners regarding holiday hazards?
  8. The holiday season is such a joyful time, but it can also mean our curious pets might get into a bit of trouble! From the food we serve, to all those festive decorations, there are plenty of holiday hazards. Our pets can be quite intrigued by the twinkling lights and shiny tinsel, not to mention the flames from the Menorah! I always suggest to keep tempting foods out of paw’s reach. Don’t forget about those holiday plants as some can be toxic to our pets. Festive lights can also cause serious oral injuries if our pets decide to chew on them. While the holiday season is filled with joy, it’s also a time to be mindful that our pets can feel a little anxious with all the hustle and bustle of extra visitors, or maybe even fewer people at home.

  9. During the holiday season, do you notice an uptick in pets coming into the ER with similar issues regarding holiday foods or events? How can these hazards be avoided?
  10. The holiday season is such a wonderful time for family and friends to gather around and enjoy all sorts of delicious food and drinks. However, let’s be honest—sometimes our pets think they deserve a seat at the table, too! During the holidays, we often see cases of chocolate ingestion and general GI upset at the ER, all because our pets couldn’t resist the amazing treats we make for ourselves. Pancreatitis is quite common during this time and it can make our pets really sick, requiring a trip to the hospital. My best advice? Avoid feeding pets any human food. And if your pet happens to munch on chocolate—yikes! Just give your local veterinarian, ER, or poison control a call to get the help they need.

As you enjoy the holiday season, it is important to take precautions for your pets to be included in all the celebrations. VCA provides peace of mind to pet owners during the holidays with the 2024 Holiday Hazards Playbook, offering household guidance, as well as ER exam discounts to pet owners nationwide.
