Alderwood Companion Animal Hospital was founded in 1983 by James McGill, DVM. It began as a single-doctor family practice, and over the last 31 years has grown into a four-doctor practice, while still maintaining a family atmosphere within the hospital. The practice moved to the current location in 1999, which allowed it to grow into a multi-doctor practice. The new location and additional doctors has allowed us to expand hours as well as services.

Our hospital is open seven days a week and offers a wealth of knowledge with our four doctors. We offer routine care and surgical services every day of the week. Our doctors work together to provide the best care for our patients.

Local Medical Issues

Is your pet itching more than usual? Has your pet been having loose stools or vomiting? These could be signs of parasites. Pets can pick up fleas and intestinal parasites, which can be hard to detect until they become a problem for your pet.

There are four stages of the flea life cycle, so even if you only see a single flea there is much more going on that you do not notice. In addition to the adult flea, the eggs, larva and pupa can live and develop within your very own home! They can live in the carpet and upholstery; which can lead to an infestation.

There are three types of intestinal parasites that are common in this area: tapeworms, roundworms, and hookworms. Pets get tapeworms by ingesting an adult flea. Roundworms and hookworms can live in the ground for long periods of time and a pet can be exposed to them by ingesting or licking soil that contains the eggs or larvae, or even just by walking on contaminated soil.

There are ways to protect your pets against fleas and intestinal parasites with preventive medications and periodic screening for parasites with fecal analysis.
