Tracey Cantamessa, Staff Veterinarian

Dr. Cantamessa, a Northern New Jersey native, currently resides in Essex County with her husband, two daughters, their dog, Meadow, and cat, Johnny. She graduated in 1997 from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor's Degree in English. She then went on to attend the Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine where she obtained her doctorate degree in 2004.

Dr. Cantamessa spent the first ten years of her career working as an associate veterinarian in Rutherford, New Jersey. In addition to caring for her many patients, she was the shelter veterinarian for the Passaic Animal Shelter, and also provided care for the local Petco and PetSmart branches during that time.

While she loves providing care for all animals, Dr. Cantamessa has a special interest in exotic animal medicine. She enjoys counseling owners on husbandry and is a strong promoter of environmental enrichment for all species. The local rabbit rescues enjoy a good working relationship with Dr. Cantamessa, and the House Rabbit Society recommends her as a preferred veterinarian in New Jersey.

Other professional interests include behavior, comprehensive work up of internal medicine cases, soft tissue surgery, working with fearful and timid patients, and she has a special fondness for senior cats. Dr. Cantamessa also is concerned about the welfare of feral cats and has spent several years working towards compassionate solutions for the feral cat overpopulation issue. In veterinary school, she was awarded the Humanitarian award at her graduation ceremony.

Outside of work, Dr. Cantamessa enjoys spending time outdoors in nature. She also enjoys photography and creating fun video projects with her husband. She has traveled to some amazing places including Yellowstone National Park and Tanzania, Africa. Dr. Cantamessa is also a freshwater aquarium hobbyist and has an impressive Sailfin Pleco (Pterygoblichthys gibbiceps) that has grown to nearly a foot long! You can check him out on her website drcantamessa.com.
