Beth Custalow

Staff Veterinarian

DVM, MS

Dr. Beth Custalow is a veterinarian at VCA Merrimac Animal Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she provides compassionate veterinary care focused on helping pets live healthy, comfortable lives while supporting the families who love them. She believes that strong relationships, open communication, and thoughtful medical recommendations are essential to helping pets receive the care they need at every stage of life.

Dr. Custalow earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and also holds a Master’s degree in Animal Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from Virginia Tech. Her advanced education reflects a strong interest in understanding how nutrition, movement, and overall wellness contribute to long-term animal health.

Early in her career, Dr. Custalow practiced large animal medicine before transitioning into small animal veterinary care. Working with a wide range of species helped shape her well-rounded medical perspective and strengthened her ability to evaluate each patient’s health from a broad, whole-animal viewpoint.

“Veterinary medicine is about more than treating illness. It is about building relationships with pets and their families and helping them make informed decisions that support their pet’s health and quality of life.”

Over the course of her career, Dr. Custalow has practiced in Virginia, California, and New York, gaining diverse medical experience while working with pets and families from many different communities. These experiences have helped shape her collaborative approach to veterinary medicine and her commitment to supporting both pets and their owners through every stage of care.

Dr. Custalow approaches veterinary medicine as a partnership with pet owners. She enjoys helping clients better understand their pet’s health, walking them through treatment options, and developing care plans that support both the well-being of the patient and the needs of the family.

“My goal is to care for every animal with the same compassion and attention I would give my own pets. When clients feel supported and confident in their pet’s care, it creates better outcomes for everyone.”

Dr. Custalow grew up in Newport News, Virginia, and is a member of the Mattaponi Indian Tribe in King William County. Her lifelong connection to animals and rural life continues today through the time she spends caring for animals on her farm, an experience that reinforces the deep bond between people and the animals they love. At VCA Merrimac Animal Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia, she brings that same respect and compassion to her work each day, partnering with clients and the veterinary team to support the health and well-being of pets throughout the Williamsburg community.
