Dr. Michael Quevedo is an associate veterinarian at VCA Old Canal Animal Hospital. A rare native Floridian, Dr. Quevedo was born and raised in the major Miami metropolitan area suburb city of Hialeah. He inherited his passion for animals from his parents who both grew up on ranches in their native countries of Cuba and Venezuela. Dr. Quevedo reminisces that their house was always a bit of a zoo and he learned to respect and care for all kinds of animals at a young age. He developed an interest in veterinary medicine in high school but was convinced to pursue an alternative career path by a school counselor, resulting in his winding, scenic road to veterinary medicine.
Dr. Quevedo earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts, with a specialization in computer animation from the prestigious Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, where he won several awards for individual work and cooperative projects, including an Addy Award (industry awards for commercials/advertisements). Unfortunately his planned career took a steep detour due to September 11th, just five months prior to graduation, and the following Persian Gulf War, which led to uncertainty and upheaval in many industries. Needing full time work, he found himself working as a bank teller, which culminated ten years later as a service manager for Wells Fargo. Banking industry upheaval led to his leaving the field. After much soul searching and the support of his wife, he enrolled at the University of South Florida in Tampa, to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical science. He went on to receive his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, where he also obtained professional certificates in shelter medicine and veterinary business management by completing additional coursework specializing in those topics. Go Gators!!
Dr. Quevedo has a soft spot for all animals and is even known to save spiders and relocate them outside. He finds cats especially fascinating for their huge variety of personalities and antics. He and his wife of 22 years share their home with one dog, a Labrador-boxer-pit bull mix, and four cats. Growing tired and less tolerant of the oppressive Florida heat, classmates from Connecticut encouraged him to check out relocating to New England. After touring Connecticut and exploring work opportunities, he and his wife fell in love with the scenery and decided to move north.
Outside of work, Dr. Quevedo enjoys exploring his new home state and New England in general, visiting state parks and historical sites, and enjoying being able to go for walks and not melt. He loves video games, movies, binging shows with his wife, rooting for various sports teams, reading, playing piano (though he's VERY rusty at the moment) and, of course, artwork.
Dr. Quevedo has a strong interest in helping educate owners to be their pets best advocates, integrative medicine, as well as shelter medicine, spay/neuter, and how to increase access to care for underserved/income-challenged populations.
