Dr. Loughlin received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and her BS in Biology from Augustana College. Before joining the team and VCA she worked as a DVM in Monterey and Santa Cruz for 15 years.
Maureen enjoys general feline and canine medicine, soft tissue surgery and dentistry. She believes in the power of the human animal bond and specializes in geriatric medicine for cats and dogs. She is a certified veterinary acupuncturist and practices Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine including acupuncture, tuina massage, nutrition and herbal medicine using ancient Chinese recipes passed down for thousands of years. She studied acupuncture and herbal medicine through the Chi Institute and studied with Dr. Xie in China.
Dr. Loughlin is a member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners, the International Sled Dog Veterinary Medical Association and the Monterey Bay VMA. She was raised by her cat named Whiskers for the first 17 years and spent most of her childhood at the local pet shop coming home with rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, frogs, turtles and fish.
Maureen lives with her family in Aptos including a border collie, Teddy Bear and her cat, Molly Mittens (born in a tree at New Leaf Market in Santa Cruz!). When not at work, Maureen takes advantage of the great outdoors: hiking, biking, kayaking, long walks with her dog, and tinkering in the garden. She is a docent naturalist at Ano Nuevo State Beach, has worked as a trail veterinarian for the Iditarod in Alaska, and recently rode her bike around Lake Tahoe in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to raise awareness for cancer research for people and animals.
