Dog sleeping positions decoded
Dogs have so many aww-inducing sleep positions that are just too cute not to share. Is it possible these very same sleeping styles might reveal something about your dog’s moods or needs as well?
While science is lacking in this adorable area of study, we’ve given it a great deal of thought, and here’s what we think these poses could mean.

Paws in the air and no care!
This dog sleeping position can mean a couple of different things. First, this position is submissive. It means your dog is completely comfortable, relaxed and making themselves vulnerable. They’re totally trusting of you and your family.
Second, sleeping on their backs with their paws in the air can help dogs cool off when they’re feeling the heat! Unlike people who can cool down through sweating, dogs perspire through the pads of their feet to regulate their body temperature. Most dogs also have a thinner belly coat, and this position allows air to circulate better across their abdomen (and their tootsies!). Many dogs can cool themselves better when they lie on their backs and expose their bellies to the air.
What’s the meaning behind other dog sleeping positions?
The side slumber.
Your dog is in deep sleep on their side with their feet out from under them. This is the most relaxed of all sleep positions. Your dog is feeling the Zen.
The sphinx.
Just like a sphinx statue, your dog is crouched square on all fours but resting their head on their front legs. This position suggests that your dog is full of energy and ready to jump into action at any moment.
The superman.
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s your dog taking a nap on their belly with their back legs stretched out behind them and their front legs sticking out ahead. This playful position indicates that your little superhero is all tuckered out from a long day of play and in need of a good stretch to boot.
The curl.
Your dog is curled up into a tiny ball. Bonus: The tip of their tail is resting on their cute little nose! In terms of meaning, this position shows they may be feeling the cold or they’re seeking comfort and security.
The cuddle.
Snuggling up with a favorite toy, another pet or—best of all—you! Easily the cutest of all, this sleeping position means your dog is craving affection and feels connected to their snuggle bunny.
