Brian Akau grew up in Mobile, Alabama. He moved to Northern Virginia in 1991 when his father was transferred. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from VCU. Brian joined the VCA Woodbridge team in 2003, working most rolls in the hospital until becoming the Hospital Manager in 2024.

Brian lives with his wife, Marla, their daughter, Abigail, and their two cats, Squirrel Nuthouse and Claudius Decimus Meridius. Brian and Marla also have a grown son named Jacob. While not at WAH, he enjoys golfing, working in his yard, and spending time with his family.
