Dr. Jorge A Ruiz, Medical Director of VCA Gateway Animal Hospital, graduated from La Salle University in Bogotá, Colombia in 1986, and dedicated his early career to working for the Colombian Ministry of Public Health on Animal Control. He later became a regional manager for Purina Pet Care Foods in Colombia, while he continued with his private practice in small animals. After arriving in the United States, he obtained certification from the AVMA Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduate (ECFVG) and the Veterinary Skills Training and Enhancement Program (VSTEP) from the Ontario Veterinary College of the University of Guelph in Canada. He is currently certified by the California Veterinary Medical Board.
Dr. Ruiz has over 26 years of experience working with the original Gateway Animal Hospital before its merger with VCA Animal Hospitals. He was technician, then veterinarian, and finally hospital director and partner of the original Gateway Animal Hospital. He is now the medical director of VCA Gateway Animal Hospital since 2017. Dr. Ruiz is highly respected and knows many of his clients by name. He has previously veterinary attention for animal rescue organizations. Dr. Ruiz has been married for 30 years He has a son who is in a medical school and a daughter who is studying to be a psychologist. He enjoys reading philosophy, hiking, swimming, and running.
