By Kayla Hyland, DVM

What is imidacloprid with flumethrin?

Imidacloprid with flumethrin (brand name Seresto® collar) is a topical antiparasitic drug contained in a collar, used for control of fleas, ticks, and chewing lice on dogs and puppies at least 7 weeks of age. This medication is labeled for control of fleas and ticks in cats and kittens that are at least 10 weeks of age.

How do I give my pet imidacloprid with flumethrin?

Imidacloprid with flumethrin comes in a collar impregnated with the medication.

  • Remove collar from package and place around the animal’s neck, securing with the buckle.
  • Do not keep too loose or too tight (2 fingers should fit comfortably between the collar and neck). Adjust fit as needed in growing puppies and kittens.
  • The collar should be worn for the entire 8 months.
  • Do not allow this medication to touch the eyes or mouth.
  • The collar is water-resistant. However, avoid bathing and swimming more than once per month to ensure the collar remains effective for the full 8 months.
  • Ensure the labeled product is used for the correct species (i.e., do not use the dog collar on cats).

This medication will start to take effect in 24 hours and the effects will last up to 8 months if the product is used properly.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

Do not apply more than 1 collar to the pet at once. Contact your veterinarian if you are concerned about the collar’s effectiveness.
