Vaccinations

At VCA Lakeside Animal Hospital, we tailor dog vaccinations and cat vaccinations to each individual pet's needs. When vaccinating dogs and cats in Reno, we consider the age and health status of your pet, and ask you questions regarding your pet's lifestyle and presence of risk exposures. Based upon your responses and the guidelines for pet vaccinations set forth by the American Veterinary Medical Association, Association of Feline Practitioners, American Animal Hospital Association and the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, we will come up with the right plan for your pet, together.

Types Of Dog Vaccinations

Under Nevada state law, all dogs and cats must be current on their rabies vaccinations. Dogs are also routinely vaccinated for canine distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza and canine parvovirus. Other dog vaccinations offer protection against leptospirosis, Lyme disease, kennel cough and more. If you reside in a neighborhood where wild mammals such as raccoons, opossums or rats are present, a leptospirosis vaccine may be considered. Dogs should be vaccinated against kennel cough only prior to a known boarding or grooming event.

Types Of Cat Vaccinations

In addition to the rabies vaccine, cat vaccinations typically include rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia and Chlamydia. The feline leukemia vaccine is not necessary for cats that remain strictly indoors. However, if one cat in a multiple cat household has tested positive for leukemia, then all other cats in the home should be vaccinated against the disease.

Individualized Treatment

Your dog or cat may be over vaccinated! Today's ideal on vaccinations is individualized. That means that we prescribe vaccine protocols to fit your pet's specific lifestyle and needs, after a careful discussion with you about the risks your pet faces. We'll explain what your pet needs, and what your pet doesn't need and why. We'll also tell you about today's alternatives to yearly vaccines. All of our staff members are up to date on the newest vaccine recommendations. If you are looking for dog or cat vaccinations in Reno, let us tailor a vaccination plan that's right for just your pet.
