Dr. Heidi Houchen received her Bachelor of Arts from Whitman College and then graduated with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University Veterinary School in 1992. The following year she completed an internship in emergency and critical care medicine at the Veterinary Institute of Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Houchen has been an ER/ICU staff doctor and a blood banking specialist in veterinary hospitals in Kansas, Wisconsin, Washington, and Oregon prior to becoming a staff veterinarian at VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists in 2006.
Dr. Houchen writes and lectures extensively, both locally and regionally, about her special interests of transfusion medicine, toxicology and trauma/CPR. Dr. Houchen is the VCA NWVS Intern Director as well as the director of the Northwest Veterinary Specialists Critical Care Blood Bank.
In her free time, she and her family enjoy hiking around the Pacific Northwest mountains and beaches, traveling to Canada to visit the Northern Resident orcas, and watching the occasional college softball game.
